A Great Start to the Dangel’s Season

Twelve Dangels plus their Coach and their water-girl Nicky, headed down to Geneva early on Saturday for their first match of the new season.

The weather was gorgeous and it was a great day to win!!! 🙂 As El Capitano (Sarah) is absent this season, Lollipop (Carole) has taken over the role of Captain for this season.

We played 10-a-side with 25 minute halves. Playing Cern is always a challenge and we felt it in the first couple of minutes when we were close to our try-line, but not able to score a try as quickly as we would have liked. Eventually we got there with a try from Carole in the corner!

A while later Meli scored a try and we were up 10-0. Cern scored a try just before half-time and we were only leading 10-7. Our newest team member – Henna from Finland – was my sub and she played very well, stepping up to the occasion.

After half-time Carole scored her second try for the match taking us further into the lead. With about 10 minutes to go I cleanly hooked opposition ball from a scrum feed, which was close to the try-line, and over the line Petra went! She dived over the try-line but my head was still stuck in the scrum so I was not a witness to her superman efforts 🙂

As time ticked away opportunity came once again for us when Wespi ran down the side of the field with ball neatly tucked under her arm. She dodged 2 or 3 players, and in the meantime Chris was shouting “Sidestep!!!” from the sideline 🙂 It worked as Wespi brilliantly side-stepped the last person and ran over the try-line! Carole converted the try and the final whistle was blown. 29-7 to the Dangels! 🙂

Angel of the match went to Iris who did superbly in the scrums and played the whole 50 minutes! Devil of the match was shared by Angi – who forgot her rugby shirt!!! and also to Petra – who forgot her red Dangel’s shirt!!!

It was a great start to the season! However we still need to improve our fitness and work on a few things! 🙂 Special thanks to our cheer-squad/water girl – Nicky 🙂
