The Ladies season in Switzerland finished with 3 consecutive tournaments: Neuchatel 7s’, St. Gallen 10’s, Wintherthur 7’s.
Neuchatel saw us beat CERN & Konstanz to play Bern in the final. Bern were on fire in the first few minutes of the final & we found ourselves 4 tries to 0 behind. In the most incredible comeback I have ever seen, let alone played in, we turned it around to score 7 tries in the second half and win the game 9 tries to 5. I don’t think the world has ever seen a prouder or more excited captain!
In St. Gallen we played 4 games without a point scored against us & won the final, again against Bern, for 4 tries to 0.
The Swiss 7’s title came down to the last tournament in Wintherthur with Luzern & Bern tied on 28 points each. This also happened to by our last game with Chris as our coach, he is sadly retiring. We won our pool games against Konstanz (45-0) and Basel (40-5) relatively easily & all of our 13 players got on the pitch. We dispatched Zurich pretty handily in the semi-final (40-0) and it was Luzern v. Bern in the final – winner takes all. I think that every player on the pitch dug deep inside themselves to show Chris how much he means to us & how much he has taught us over the years. We absolutely *rocked* the final and ran out winners 60 – 17.
Cue lots of crying rugby girls 🙂
So, it’s with a proud & heavy heart that we say goodbye to this season. We lost our Championship Title and we lost our coach. We won the 7’s title for the fourth year running & St. Gallen for the second year in a row. We have 3 new Swiss teenagers playing rugby with us. Four girls are in the Swiss 7’s team going to the European Championships next weekend and another three are in the national squad. We have the biggest & best pool of players in Switzerland and Chris is leaving us in the very capable hands of Andy Symonds for next season.
A huge THANK-YOU to everyone involved in Rugby Club Luzern – it’s been a fantastic & fun-filled season as always.
A final thank-you to Chris: you made this team what it is & we love you for it.
